Venga miro hoy esta noticia en dos sitios, y no me sorprende, GoDaddy sucks  Ahora ademas de registrador, Bob Parsons quiere hacer de juez y suspender dominios.

    Why domainers shouldn't use GoDaddy

Today's tip is sweet and simple: Don't use GoDaddy. Their domain administration interface is a mess and makes it very difficult to administrate large numbers of domains. But what's even more dangerous is that you might actually lose your domains without
recourse if someone complains about them or if GoDaddy makes an administrative mistake.

GoDaddy abrubtly suspends registration, causes free speech concerns.

GoDaddy chief Bob Parsons is a big supporter of free speech. He’s also a big supporter of privacy as a way to do this by promoting domain whois privacy services.

That’s why the internet world was shocked today to learn that GoDaddy suspended a domain name, seclists.org, based on the content on that site. MySpace contacted GoDaddy to suspend the registration because the site had information about MySpace users including their usernames and passwords. GoDaddy complied.

To make matters worse, GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones responded by saying GoDaddy’s terms of service say the company “reserves the right to terminate your access to the services at any time, without notice, for any reason whatsoever”, according to the CNET article.

That attitude should make people think twice about registering domains with the company. I suspect that, although its in the terms and conditions, it’s not GoDaddy’s policy to terminate access to services for any reason.

What is a registrar’s role in enforcing the law? This is a topic of much debate. In July eNom came under pressure because one of its resellers registered a domain on behalf of a terrorist organization. Last year an organization tried to get a court order to force ICANN to suspend the registration of Spamhaus, an anti-spam site. Domain registars are also coming under fire to track registrations of typo domains that might be used for phishing attacks.

Generally speaking, a domain registrar supplies the domain but the content is hosted with the webhost. A webhost should be responsible for complying with requests to remove copyrighted content and remove sites that violate the law. In this case, MySpace probably contact GoDaddy because it’s a large company. Webhosts are often small and difficult to contact.

You can rest assured that Bob Parsons will blog about this issue. He has some explaining to do.

Popular computer security Web site Seclists.org was abruptly deactivated this week by MySpace.com and GoDaddy, the world’s largest domain name registrar, raising questions about free speech and Internet governance.

MySpace demanded that GoDaddy pull the plug on seclists.org, which hosts some 250,000 pages of mailing list archives and other resources, because a list of thousands of MySpace usernames and passwords was archived on the site. […]

GoDaddy complied. In a move that Seclists.org owner Fyodor Vaskovich said happened with no prior notice, the company deleted his domain name–causing his site to be effectively unreachable for about seven hours on Wednesday until he found out what was happening and removed the password list.

“They didn’t tell me why they removed the site,” Vaskovich, creator of the popular Nmap security auditing utility, said in a phone interview. “At a very minimum, we should get warning.” […]

When asked if GoDaddy would remove the registration for a news site like CNET News.com, if a reader posted illegal information in a discussion forum and editors could not be immediately reached over a holiday, GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones replied: “I don’t know…It’s a case-by-case basis.”

    Daily Domainer comments:

GoDaddy lives up to its cowboy image by shooting first and asking questions later. Domainers should avoid GoDaddy altogether, and eNom as well, which engages in similar practices. In some cases a fake spam complaint from an anonymous email address will suffice to get your competitor’s domain offline for hours or even days. Here’s another complaint about how GoDaddy deleted a domain from one of their clients’ accounts and then auctioned it off on their domain auction service.
