A Cellphone's Missing Dot Kills Two People, Puts Three More in Jail
The life of 20-year-old Emine, and her 24-year-old husband Ramazan Çalçoban was pretty much the normal life of any couple in a separation process. After deciding to split up, the two kept having bitter arguments over the cellphone, sending text messages to each other until one day Ramazan wrote "you change the topic every time you run out of arguments." That day, the lack of a single dot over a letter—product of a faulty localization of the cellphone's typing system—caused a chain of events that ended in a violent blood bath (Warning: offensive language ahead.)
5420730.jpgThe surreal mistake happened because Ramazan's sent a message and Emine's cellphone didn't have an specific character from the Turkish alphabet: the letter "?" or closed i. While "i" is available in all phones in Turkey—where this happened—the closed i apparently doesn't exist in most of the terminals in that country.
The use of "i" resulted in an SMS with a completely twisted meaning: instead of writing the word "s?k?s?nca" it looked like he wrote "sikisince." Ramazan wanted to write "You change the topic every time you run out of arguments" (sounds familiar enough) but what Emine read was, "You change the topic every time they are fucking you" (sounds familiar too.)
5420731.jpgEmine then showed the message to her father, who—enraged—called Ramazan, accusing him of treating his daughter as a prostitute. Ramazan went to the family's home to apologize, only to be greeted by the father, Emine, two sisters and a lot of very sharp knives.
Injured and bleeding, with a knife on his chest, Ramazan tried to escape. Emine was still trying to finish him on the door, but he managed to take the knife out of his chest and attacked back, wounding her. Ramazan finally escaped, and was caught by the police, but Emine bleed to dead as the family waited for an ambulance to cross Ankara's hellish traffic to reach their home.
Confused by all the events, he later killed himself in jail.
Apparently it's not the first incident of this kind caused by the damned dot on top of the letter i. The local press has pointed out that the faulty localization of cellphones in Turkey is causing "serious problems" when it comes to certain "delicate words" in Turkish, and they are calling to enhance localization of technology to avoid these mistakes.
Alternatively, the press could ask for banning knives from the homes of demonstrably stupid people. [Hurriyet—in Turkish—thanks to our Turkish-speaking readers for the corrections]

Insólito: el punto de la "i" causa tragedia familiar
Los teléfonos celulares que se comercializan en Turquía no cuentan con algunos caracteres indispensables para el alfabeto de ese país.
La falta de la “i” con punto causó una tragedia en Turquía, ya que por un malentendido un hombre asesinó a su ex esposa y luego se quitó la vida.
La falta de caracteres apropiados para el alfabeto turco en el teclado del teléfono móvil provocó una serie de malentendidos entre una pareja separada en Ankara y terminó con un asesinato y un suicidio.
La insólita y alarmante historia comenzó con la separación de Emine y Ramazan Çalçoban, un matrimonio turco que decidió romper su relación tras pelearse, informó ayer el diario turco 'Hürriyet'.
Emine, una joven de 20 años, retornó entonces a la casa de su padre, Hamdi Pulas, pero la pareja no dejó de pelear tras la separación, sino que continuaron las disputas a través de mensajes de textos.
En una ocasión, Ramazan, de 24 años, le dijo a su ex mujer que siempre cambiaba de tema cuando se quedaba sin argumentos. Acá estuvo el inconveniente: en muchos teclados de teléfono celular no existe el carácter para la "I" turca (i cerrada, que se escribe sin punto), por lo que en lugar de escribir "sIkIsInca" (cuando te quedas sin argumentos), el hombre escribió "sikisince" (cuando no tenés relaciones sexuales).
En el informe de la investigación judicial, el fiscal explicó que Emine se tomó el mensaje como un insulto y se lo mostró a su padre, quien se enfureció e increpó a su ex yerno, Ramazan: "Nos has insultado, has mancillado nuestro honor. Estás tratando a mi hija como si fuese una prostituta".
Cuando Ramazan fue a la casa de su ex mujer y su antiguo suegro para explicarse, toda la familia Pulas se le echó encima y le hirieron con un cuchillo. Como venganza, Ramazan acuchilló a Emine hasta matarla y fue encarcelado por ello, pero se suicidó en la prisión.
Ahora el fiscal exige una condena de 15 años de cárcel para Hamdi Pulas, el padre de la joven, y otras dos hijas suyas, por el "intento de asesinato" a Ramazan.
"Un pequeño punto destruyó las vidas de cinco personas", publicó el diario 'Hürriyet' en portada y añadió que el punto de la 'i' en ciertas palabras delicadas de la lengua turca está causando "serios problemas”.@Domainer -
La locura de las personas nada tiene que ver con un sms y menos la falta de un punto en la i, la locura estaba ya instaurada en sus cabezas, en este caso fue este el detonante, como podía ser cualquier otra cosa...como cebarle un mate frío meterle 70 puñaladas por ello
